Ketan Jawdekar's design for Effingut WTC stands out for its unconventional use of automobile engine parts in the interior decor. This innovative approach not only attracts clientele but also keeps the design fresh and appealing, aligning with future trends. The concept of using engine parts was born from a desire to emphasize the relationship between Pune's automobile manufacturing industry and Effingut's craft beer.
The realization of this design involved a heritage look with false wooden trusses on the ceiling, an al fresco seating area, and a feature wall of engine parts cut and assembled together. This feature wall serves as a backdrop to the entire place, adding an interesting composition to the space. The restaurant is situated on the podium level of WTC at Pune, with an indoor space of 170 square meters and an outdoor area of 120 square meters.
The design process was not without its challenges. The feature wall, composed of car engine parts, was a significant structural load. To overcome this, the parts were cut into slices and sourced from the scrap market of automobile from Delhi. The engines were cut with high-pressure water jet cutters and transported on-site. Erecting and welding the parts on-site was a tough job, as was sourcing around 3500 used spark plugs.
Effingut WTC is more than just a place to enjoy a drink; it's a place of experience. It features an open-air seating with wooden furniture layout for the smoker community, low illumination levels, and decent usage of highlighters for the stuff on the wall covering various themes related to signs of the times. Group seating on the backdrop of engine parts and the backdrop of the bar created by recycling three thousand spark plugs are features that one needs to experience.
The design's uniqueness and innovation have not gone unnoticed. It was awarded the Golden A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2018. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advancing art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
